Winning Tips 2

Finding Competitions

When you start looking for competitions you soon develop an eye and find them lurking in all sorts of places you hadn't noticed before. Keep a special look out for the word ‘WIN’ flashed on products. Always check out store-specific freebie magazines. Supermarkets, bookshops, chemists, cinemas, music stores, banks, and petrol stations are the best bet for competitions, but you can find them almost anywhere. Local newspapers are another good source, particularly for the beginner, as they generally attract fewer entrants. If you have children they can be very helpful, we have found that a small monetary reward improves their eyesight no end!

Be organised!

Don’t waste your time working on a tiebreak until you have the qualifier, e.g., till receipt. This is particularly important with perishable or seasonal goods with short shelf-lives. Get all your competitions filed by closing date in a system that allows the safe storage of qualifiers. Try using plastic sleeves for each competition. Pop a sticky label in the top right hand corner, and write on the closing date. Keep the competition entry form inside together with the qualifier and a piece of paper with the slogan 'intro' written at the top. Have the word limit clearly marked. Use this paper for jotting down your slogan ideas, and your eventual winner! File all your sleeves in a cardboard folder dedicated to each month of the year. When your LWE (Long White Envelope) arrives telling you that you have won, it is nice to be able to check the details of your prize and slogan!

Read the small print!

Don't get yourself disqualified through lack of attention to detail! Make sure you complete all of the requested details, from the answers to the questions (sometimes you can get so wrapped up in the slogan that you forget to tick the answer to the rather obvious multiple choice question!), through your personal details, to the box you might have to tick to say you have enclosed the qualifier! Don't ever attach the till receipt to the entry form, unless it specifically requests it, and don't forget to circle the specific qualifying purchase on the till receipt itself.

Keep it neat and legible

Don’t rely on a cheap biro, - get yourself a decent FINE POINT ballpoint pen. A ‘fine’ point is essential when you are trying to squeeze your answers into the ridiculously small space allocated by a poorly designed Entry Form. To be on the safe side, make sure it is black, and ALWAYS use CAPITAL letters. Make it legible and neat, and if you make a mistake, screw it up and complete another form. Altered entries will be disqualified! Presentation is all in competition entries. You may have thought of the best slogan the world has ever seen, but if the judge can’t read it – you’ve just wasted your time.
